A basic introduction to the concept of speed and how to calculate speed (speed=distance/time)

Also includes my Speed Activity activity sheet that can take place in a gym, field, hallway or classroom. Students are to partner up and take turns recording data from 5 different activities. Students will practice calculating speed by recording the distance and time it takes their partners to accomplish running, skipping, dribbling, basketball weaving (between the legs), and dribbling two basketballs. For my classroom I performed all 5 activities in the gym which allowed me to know the exact distance of the court (84 feet) and various lengths such as half court. All of my documents are Word documents which allows for manipulation and changes by the teacher to suit the needs of their classroom and the space.

Each activity designates a role for the partners. One partner will record time for the second partner while they perform their task. Students are to switch roles after two trials. Four trials total for each activity.
1. Stopwatch or other recording device like an app on a computer, phone or ipad per group
2. Basketball for each partner group
Alternative modification: instead of giving the students the distance they will cover, have them measure it out.
