This Smart Notebook Minilesson introduces students to writing a proof by using solving methods they are already familiar with. The lesson begins with a warm up problem of solving a two step equation. Next students are introduced to the vocabulary of hypothesis, conclusion, and conditional statement. Students are then given six examples to practice writing a two column proof using algebraic properties.
I have found that writing proofs is one of the most difficult concepts for students to grasp, and beginning with equations they are already familiar with helps them to understand the process of showing their work, and giving an explanation for how the came up with their answer.
This can be used on the Smart Board as whole/small group instruction, or can be printed out for individual practice. Answers are included.
