Before exposing the students to all the vocabulary and ideas behind the framing of the United States Constitution, I have the students create their own club using the framework and vocabulary that the Founding Fathers used. In this activity, students will write a mission statement (preamble), develop rules (Bill of Rights), and create a hierarchy for their club (separation of powers). This assignment comes with a student-created sample!
I usually reserve the computer lab for two days and have the students work in pairs. I begin by going through the presentation with the students and reviewing the essential question. I then give them time to create a club (the more creative the better) using this easy to use presentation template (included). I also have the student present their clubs to the class.
After this activity, your students will have a great understand of the structure and challenges that faced the Founding Fathers when they were drafting the U.S. Constitution.
