Since students frequently experience difficulties in creating effective titles, introductions and conclusions, this unit from High 5 Achievers addresses those challenges in an informative and lighthearted manner. This lesson plan has been aligned to the Common Core State Standards and consists of three exercises. which offer suggestions for differentiated instruction. Each exercise has a corresponding teacher key with suggested responses. The lesson plan, depending on the length of the classroom period, can be covered in two days.
• Exercise 1 provides one example of an informational introduction and conclusion which the teacher and students can discuss in terms of effectiveness.
• Exercise 2 consists of one narrative example of an introduction and conclusion; students may complete these exercise alone, in pairs or in small groups. The exercises ask students to read model introductions and conclusions and answer a series of questions. Teacher Keys accompany all exercises.
• Exercise 3 can be assigned as a homework assignment; it can serve as a summative assessment for the unit.
There are also two additional sample introductions and conclusions that may be used with struggling students. These two samples include an information example and a primary source example.
