Intruder Drills are a difficult topic for students, teachers, and the entire community. It is a topic that must be discussed with sensitivity. This social story provides the opportunity to discuss intruders and what to do during an intruder drill using simple, clear, and accurate vocabulary. The story begins by discussing lots of ways that students practice safety at school (from washing hands to facing forward in the halls) to start the discussion of safety in a simple way. Students will learn what an intruder is, what to do during an intruder drill, the importance of listening to adults, remaining calm and quiet, the options of barricading (staying in the classroom) or leaving the school. This page can easily be removed if your school does not use this option. Also included in the book is a vocabulary page and question/review page. There is great POWER in the entire school using this book, so that all teachers use common vocabulary in talking about this sensitive topic. If your entire school would like to use this important book, please purchase the SCHOOL-WIDE SITE LICENSE also available in my story.
