These handouts were created for use in a volcano unit in a middle school classroom. The following intrusive igneous formations are included: batholith, xenolith, laccolith, dike, sill, pluton, magma chamber, and parasitic cone. I always found these difficult to teach because there is little application, just knowledge level content. With this resource, students will first color the labeled diagram and write their own description for the formations. On the second handout, students will read the actual definition, find the structure on the previous handout, coordinate it with a different diagram, and color according to instruction. As elementary as coloring is, science shows us that it does in fact help us to learn new material.
My volcano bundle with student workbook will be out within the next week, and this resource will be included! Stay tuned!
