In my 8th grade U.S. History class, I often do projects that connect the ideas for students. This project, done in the first semester, requires students to do some basic research on an invention or discovery that relates to their lives in the United States today. Sometimes I give them a choice from a hat of items that will bring them to a specific place, i.e. England or China, while other times I let them look around their houses and find their own invention. I often stipulate a "first-come, first-served" policy so I don't get 28 research reports on the ipod. This document is the basic assignment, which includes a short essay, a 3-dimensional object, and a brief oral presentation.
