This file includes the following full day of activities for your sub teacher: Morning and afternoon large group “messages” for students to complete and for the sub teacher to use
as “get acquainted” and “end of day wrap up” meetings. Each message should take from 30 to 45 minutes of class time.
Reader Response papers for students to write after they have read independently for 30 (or more) minutes. Students will record what they learned about plot, characters, setting, and new words, whether they read a chapter of the book or the entire book. Non fiction readers will record facts learned. These reader response papers provide the opportunity for small group or large group sharing upon completion.
Literacy activities on Inventors and Inventions include:
Brainstorming inventions we use everyday
Reading about the invention of refrigeration, potato chips, video games, and Legos
Coloring or constructing a Legos page
Designing a video game
Reading about Ben Franklin and Thomas Edison
Comparing/contrasting Ben Franklin and Thomas Edison using Venn Diagram
Brainstorming characteristics/personality traits of inventors
Choosing and researching an inventor using graphic organizers provided
Taking notes on inventor classroom presentations
Reading “What is a Patent?
Brainstorming a new invention to draw and tell about
Asking “Why” and “How” questions and other things inventors want to know about
Practicing new vocabulary words; reviewing with vocabulary games
Math activities include:
Solving a secret sentence with math computation problems
Inventing the “world’s largest” multiplication, division, addition, and subtraction problems
Also included in the plans is an activities grid that briefly explains each activity, possible variations of the activity, materials needed, and COMMON CORE STANDARD APPLIED
