Create Your Own Invention:

Students will design and build a new invention out of everyday items YOU provide. Items include but aren't limited to: paper, popsicle sticks, straws, pipe cleaners, tin foil, fuzzy pom-poms, string, etc. This makes a great STEM activity!

Students will use the digital planning sheet in Google Slides™ to brainstorm their invention. The teacher can choose if his/her students fill out the planning sheet before they use the supplies to create their inventions or after students have had the opportunity to manipulate the supplies. Students will type their thoughts into the text boxes that are provided on the planning sheet. They will be asked to sketch their invention. This part will be completed in Google Drawing and pulled into this Google Slides™ activity. A video tutorial is provided to show students how to open a Google Drawing™ document straight from their Google Slides™ presentation, use the different tools to create, save as a png file and then pull into their planning sheet to fit inside of the sketch box.

A Google Slides™ presentation template is provided for students to complete. They can add a selfie of themselves holding their creation to add to the presentation. Directions are included.

Note: You could opt to make this project completely digital and just have your students design in Google Drawing™ and that be it! They could add their Google Drawing™ creation to their writing template instead of taking a selfie with an invention they made from materials.

An editable grading rubric is included.

Famous Inventors Research Project:

This digital Famous Inventors resource is intended to be a research project that is completed in Google Slides™. Students can complete all of the slides independently or you can turn it into a collaborative project. Once students complete their research, they can type a sentence or a paragraph (depending on their level) in the text box provided. This presentation can be turned into a digital book that can be embedded on your class blog/website or emailed home to parents.
