PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

Investigating Bacteria and Anti Bacterial Lab Report template with added Rubric

This is a lab I did with my 9th graders where we swabbed 4 areas (door handles, toilets, another teachers forehead) of the school using cotton q-tips and placed those samples on 4 sections of a Petri dish. Then we allowed 2 days for bacterial growth (no incubator required just a dark cupboard). Once there was sufficient bacterial growth we transferred the colonies onto a second Petri dish and allowed to grow for another 2 days. It was this Petri dish that we used to test 4 different types of antibacterial soap or cleaning solutions using eye droppers. Students wrote a conclusion paragraph evaluating the effectiveness of each antibacterial product.
This lab report has the students evaluate each step of the entire process. If anything happens to the bacterial colonies keep the first Petri dish as backup.
Very easy lab for biology students and extremely creative- I encouraged my students to create and test one 'natural' antibacterial product (such as vinegar and lemons solution) in order to compare to store bought products. Great way to show students the effectiveness of natural homemade cleaning products- which you can also spend a lesson talking about the environmental and health impacts of manufactured cleaning solutions

Format:
Students will be able to evaluate collected data
Students will be able to collect evidence to answer an experimental question
Students will be able to draw a logical conclusion to the experimental question using evidence to support their answer

Students will be able to demonstrate their understanding of:
1. Where the most/least amount of bacteria can be found in an area
2. Understand how disk diffusion works with antibacterials
3. How to design and carry out a scientific investigation independently
4. How to organize and process data from a scientific investigation
5. How to analyze collected data and make a conclusion with supporting evidence

Materials:
Petri dishes with nutritional agar
Q-tips
Cleaning solutions such as windex etc
Eye droppers

This lab is extremely easy but informative for students. Can be manipulated and tweaked to suit your classroom. By far my students favorite lab
