Have students apply their understanding of transverse and compressional waves in this guided lab activity using ropes and slinkies. Student create their own waves, identify the parts of a wave and practice measuring the characteristics of wavelength, frequency and amplitude in small groups. Students will also calculate wave speed. Upon analysis, students should be able to see the relationship between amplitude and energy as well as frequency and wavelength of waves as expected by the current core standards for types of waves and their characteristics. Materials required per group include one meter stick, one stopwatch (free app available), one piece of rope (6-8 ft), and one slinky.
