After noticing that my class was not using capital letters correctly in their writing, "Capitalization" became the first lesson in my Assessment Based Unit of study (for Writing). Places where I found that students were NOT using capital letters included; the beginning of their sentences, proper nouns (names of people, places, days of the week, months of the year, holidays), titles, and for emphasis.
In this lesson students use their personal reading books to "investigate" where Writers use capital letters. This lesson was used as a Formal Observation by my AP. In addition, this lesson also includes modifications/adaptations for students with special needs. Download to find out more about my "Capitalization Investigation"
