This is a real world problem that students can use to investigate how to calculate the distance between two points. It is designed to be used with a partner but you can edit the Word document to meet your needs. The real world problem is one that teens can easily relate to as it involves two football players practicing a pass down the football field. The writing prompts at the bottom of the document as students to recall prior knowledge and consider what they've already learned that might help them and then asks them to use those tools and strategies to solve the problem as well as select a speaker to explain it to the class. This is a great kick-off activity for teaching distance in the coordinate plane. An answer key is not provided since this is an investigation in which students may or may not develop a solution.
