Many linear regression problems give students a table filled in with data. In this activity, students will collect their own data. They will use the Internet and then their graphing calculators to determine the linear equation that models flight distances and flight times.
Student Directions: Many travelers rely on their airline flight schedule to form their itinerary for their trip. When booking a flight, the airline will list the departure time from the current city and the arrival time to the destination city. Assume that you are booking all flights out of the Charlotte Douglas International Airport. Using this airport as your departure site and the Internet, fill in the table with the flight times (in minutes) and the flight distances (in miles) for the cities listed.
This resource can be used in-class or out-of-class, depending on your students' access to the Internet.
