What is paragraph research?
Paragraph research is a technique I created to help students understand the basics of doing research. I came up with the idea while teaching 7th grade Language Arts. While asking my students to write one paragraph on a topic that they chose, I saw, much to my dismay, that none of them could write the paragraph while staying on topic and giving it supporting details. Sentences did not flow, opinions were inserted, 1st person pronouns were used and the facts were not facts but rather what they “thought” was right. Thus, paragraph research was created.
Paragraph research is taking one topic and writing, as it says, one paragraph while staying on the topic and giving details. Once the paragraph is perfected, taking one of those details and expanding on it into a second paragraph and so on. The beginning lessons are very basic and as students master a simple paragraph, on topic, supporting details, no first person pronouns, etc. the lessons become more complex. (I have also found this is a perfect way to get back into writing research papers after breaks).
What is Investigative Research?
This is the complex, more analytical 2nd step to Paragraph Research. Students are building upon the foundation they have mastered in Paragraph Research. Taking a vital question and topic and building a 3-5 paragraph essay while staying on topic with relevant evidence and support.
There are six steps to Investigative Research:
This template is PERFECT for writing standard 7 which states that students are to write "short focused research."
