Six (6) animated PowerPoint slides that demonstrate how two atoms become friends and exchange an electron, only to find themselves stuck together (and a little salty). Sodium and Chlorine are a simple example of how ions form and become bonded together into a new compound.
Watch the atoms converse as they decide to make the exchange. Change and update the ions' dialogue to suit whatever colloquial teen language you think your students will get a kick out of. Then, you can start discussing which other groups on the periodic table might strike up similar deals in order to reach stability with their valence electrons.
