This Ionic Compound Formation Puzzle Pieces is a hands-on manipulative and corresponding worksheet are designed to help students visualize the ratio of cations and anions required to make a variety of neutral compounds.
After students have been given a brief introduction to the factors involved in the formation of compounds, I give each group a set of cards. The introductory paragraph on the worksheet will call to attention the definition of cations and anions, as well as describing the design of each card: All anions pieces are shown with a respective quantity of points that represent the number of electrons gained and all cations have indents, reflective of their respective quantity of electrons lost.
The puzzle pieces are designed so that the anion will always be found on the right, the cation on the left. I like to print them on colored paper so that they are easy for a students to categorize into groups before they begin. You may either print them on 2 colors, one color for the cations, one for the anions; or you can print the on 6 different colors, one color for each of the +1, +2, +3, -1, -2 & -3 ions. The file is designed out so that there are two sets per page and are in a zig-zag fashion so they are easy for cutting. Laminate and use for years!
Beginning ionic compound formation with conceptual activities really helps students "connect" the abstract with physical.
