This activity includes 4 pages of ions and an answer page. This activity involves the students getting into groups of 2-4 and cutting out 51 different ions out of plain paper. Each ion is bordered for easy cutting. Then each group decides how to create the 20 compounds (e.g. sodium sulfate - requires 2 - Na+ and 1 - SO4 -2). As the teacher, you are free to roam around the room checking progress and possibly given hints (the biggest hint is all charges have to equal zero and you cannot have different cations or anions in the compound (e.g. K+Na+ and SO4-2). The group that correctly identifies all 20 compounds - without any extras - is the winner. Please note: this is a difficult activity, students may get frustrated - please encourage them - this is an activity they can complete it is a challenging activity.
