Product Description
This is a Common Core approach to introducing irony and satire that integrates reading and writing instruction. The beginning of the unit familiarizes students with the definitions of various ironic devices, and then explores their applications in easily digestible formats such as cartoons, videos, short essays and poems. Students gradually move from identifying examples of ironic devices in these texts, to performing written analysis of how they are used to create an effect or support a theme. Lesson plans include whole class reading and discussion sessions, structured group work, and individualized assessments. Students are ultimately guided through an in-class reading of Jonathan Swift’s “A Modest Proposal,” a sophisticated work of satire that requires a great deal of scaffolding and support. After reading this text, students create their own versions of “A Modest Proposal,” and complete an essay test in class. This test calls for them to perform an extended analysis of how Jonathan Swift’s use of a variety of satirical devices supports a thematic statement.
