Although irony is usually associated with Literature, it is an important and all too common concept in History as well. Analyzing how ironic certain events in history really are forces students to think on a higher level. But first students must know what irony actually is. This activity makes students familiar and comfortable with the concept of irony through a series of exercises. Rather than giving students a standard definition of irony, this activity challenges students to come up with their own definition of irony based on 8 clear examples of irony. Then, they are given a list of 7 examples and non-examples where they must distinguish between ironic and merely coincidental events. Finally, students are given a list of 6 ironic events in history where they have to explain what is ironic about the events.
