This zip drive contains:
1) Irony PPT--includes modern day video examples, as well as definitions, examples, and a breakdown of the three types of irony: verbal, situational, and dramatic.
2) The Story of an Hour by Kate Chopin w/annotation space
3) Types of Irony Chart--includes three categories--type, definition, and example. Students use this to fill out while taking notes.
4)Irony Chart for The Story of an Hour by Kate Chopin--students complete this chart by finding five examples of irony in Chopin's short story.
5)Creative Writing Assignment--students have three options for a creative writing assignment after the reading, annotation, and irony breakdown of The Story of an Hour. This includes a breakdown of the writing assignment choices, as well as a grading rubric for the assignment.
This unit can be altered if you wish to choose a different short story, but students have found Chopin's work engaging, especially with a little background history of how women were treated in the 19th century. The creative writing assignment is a great alternative for a five paragraph essay, because not only do we get tired of grading those essays, students get tired of writing them as well!
Use this unit for 3-4 days and take a break from the pacing guide!
