We developed this Irregular Past Tense Verb Training Unit in order to tackle the tricky subject area of learning verbs that do no take on the traditional -ed endings when changed from present tense to past tense. A unit like this helps to aid the student in the memorization that is needed for each and every irregular past tense verb.
To start the training, the educator can give each student the Irregular Past Tense Verb Screener. This is a way to establish a baseline score for student understanding of a variety of irregular past tense verbs before the unit is presented to the student. When the unit is complete, the screener can be given once again and this will help to show student progress.
To help teach students the verbs we supplied colorful and fully illustrated flashcards that can be used for games such as Memory Match or Go Fish. We also developed the colored flash cards so that they can be used for a Write The Room activity. The students walk around the room and find the irregular past tense verb cards that get posted randomly in the classroom or therapy room.
In addition, we included fun black-ink, quick print activities like tic-tac-toe, crosswords and the Spin & Say Activity. The favorite one of all of our students is the BINGO game boards! The caller reads the present tense verb sentence and the past tense verb sentence that is missing the verb. The student names the irregular past tense verb needed to complete the sentence and finds the picture of the verb. It's such a fun way to learn about irregular past tense verbs and to hear them being used in a sentence.
To finish off the training for each student, we included a variety of worksheets that target irregular past tense verb understanding at the word and sentence levels. Answer sheets follow each worksheet.
Why teach students about grammar? Grammar, is the foundation for communication — the better the grammar, the clearer the message, the more likelihood of understanding the message’s intent and meaning. If we teach students to use and to understand grammar, they will communicate better, understand what other's are saying better, and even become better readers and writers.
