This activity practices the five different types of irregular preterite verbs: irregular yo verbs, short infinitive verbs, irregular stem verbs, stem change verbs and i-y spell change verbs. To do this activity I have my students define all the verbs on the list. We then divide the backs of our papers into five columns, one column for each irregular preterite category. Then the students go through their list and write each verb in the appropriate category. I ask my students to give one example of a conjugation of each verb, so they can prove to me they know how to use the verbs. For example, when they write "jugar" in the "irregular yo verbs" column, they then have to write the yo form of the verb next to jugar to prove they know how to use the verb. After we check this activity as a class I then do a "five corners" activity as a follow up and check for understanding. Each verb category has a "corner" of the room. Each of the students has an index card with one of the irregular preterite infinitive verbs on it. The students meet in the middle of the classroom and trade cards with one another until I tell them to stop. Then they look at their card and decide which "corner" they are supposed to be in. We check as a class and do the activity as many times as needed.
