Irregular verbs are challenging to students learning English. There is no pattern, and the way to mastery is through repetitive use and memorization. Students enjoy games for this concept, though, and I've used these games with grades 2 - High School (and if I'm remembering correctly, adult community classes, too). Included are:
60 (30 pairs) irregular present & past tense verb cards which have a visual and the verb.
1 Template to print the opposite side of the verb cards
25 present tense VERB-O (bingo) boards
25 past tense VERB-O (bingo) boards
The card deck can be used to play Go Fish, Memory Games, Timed Speed Sorts, and if you print two decks, students can do speed sort races against one another. Another game students really enjoy playing is Verb Blurt. Divide the class into 2 teams and shuffle the deck. One person (teacher or choose a student leader) holds up the cards one at a time. The first team to say the matching present or past tense verb correctly gets the point. The winner is the team with the most points after going through the card deck.
To play VERB-O, (bingo) sort the deck into present and past tense sets, then choose one set of boards, present or past tense, and give each student a board. Pull, call, and show the word from the card set that provides a match for the distributed VERB-O boards. For example, if students have past-tense boards, pull present tense cards, and have students find and cover the matching past tense verb on their board. When a student calls VERB-O, s/he must use 1-2 of the covered words in sentences to claim themselves a winner.
