This product was test in several fourth grade classrooms. I created it because, when students are asked if their answer is reasonable, they always answer yes. I thought I would borrow a technique from the writing process and have students evaluate other people’s answers for reasonableness by creating a low estimate and a high estimate and then seeing if the other person’s estimate fell in between.
There are a lot of steps for students to follow initially. I found that struggling students of often needed every single step, while advanced students could do more in their head after the steps were explained to them. This “work-it-out” sheet uses the gradual release of responsibility model and encourages students to do more of the work with each problem.
