Matter is often defined as anything that has mass and takes up space. What does that really mean?
In this activity, students will engage their critical thinking skills and work collaboratively to determine if something can be classified as matter.
Give each group of 2-4 students a card sort and ask them to separate the items into two categories, matter and not matter. As they work each student should check their thinking by marking if each item has mass and/or volume on their checklists.
This a great formative assessment tool, that also encourages collaboration and communication among students.
