This lesson covers Islam's beginning, core beliefs, and rise in the Middle East. The PowerPoint features visually-engaging slides and simple notes for students to better understand the essential information.
Also included in the download is an editable guided notes worksheet, interactive notebook-style notes page, Google Slides presentation, and flipped classroom video!
Each of these topics are discussed in the PowerPoint:
- The geography of the Arabian Peninsula
- Bedouin people
- Trade routes of the Middle East
- Muhammad's early life
- Islam's connection to Judaism and Christianity
- The Dome of the Rock and its significance
- The spread of Islam
- Islam's 5 Pillars
- The Qur'an (Koran)
- Plus more!
This is an excellent and even-handed overview of the founding and early years of Islam. I have fine tuned it over years with my World History classes and students are consistently engaged during the presentation. The guided notes page is also an excellent tool to keep students focused on your key points and not be overwhelmed with writing notes.
Also included is a fully-narrated "flipped classroom" video version of the lesson! This video is perfect for assigning to students with the guided notes as a homework assignment to save class time for projects and other activities. It's also great for showing in class, saving for absent students, or watching yourself to prep for the lesson.
A good follow-up PowerPoint to this one is this Islam: Growth & Spread of Islamic Civilizations PowerPoint. Both PowerPoints along with an interactive notebook, Google Drive, and more activities can be found in this Islamic Civilizations Unit Bundle.
