This unit introduces students to the fundamental beliefs of Islam. The PowerPoint provides an overview of the beliefs, and the readings go into detail regarding the 5 Pillars of Islam. The reading for the "5 Pillars of Islam" takes students to a deeper level of understanding of the practices.
The second Day of the PowerPoint begins to challenge students to think about stereotypes in general, and then specifically as it relates to the Muslim World. I have included two articles and an essay project that you could use as a writing assessment. The essay is a 4 paragraph persuasive essay piece that has students pick a position for or against wearing hijab based on the evidence in the two articles. A separate PowerPoint and short video are both included for this follow up to the introduction to Islam. A class debate is outline in the PowerPoint, which works great to get students discussing the issues. This essay is a great piece for students who need a great deal of guidance with their writing, or you can modify it for more advanced writers.
