For a number of years, I used pre-made ranking activities in my ESL and EFL classes, but I felt that often the instructions provided were not complete, or that there were not enough steps and supports for the English learners in my course. As a result, with this Island Survival Activity, I have tried to provide thorough directions and visual support to make the experience truly valuable for the students. Included in this document is an explanation of the survival scenario (a tropical island in the Pacific), as well as pictures to illustrate the items the students are asked to rank in order of importance. The scenario and the individual ranking could be done in class or as homework, though the group activities (of course!) would need to be done in class. In addition to providing space for students to write their reasons for ranking certain items higher than others, I also include an activity that invites learners to brainstorm ways that people agree or disagree in English. These two steps make the interaction concerning a group ranking particularly rich! I hope you enjoy it!
