The Island of the Blue Dolphins by Scott O'Dell is a story about a
young Indian girl, Karana, who remains behind on an island.
Karana must survive by finding food, making her own shelter and
weapons, learning to live without human contact, and fighting off
wild dogs that also live on the island. The story is based on a
historical character known as The Lost Woman of San Nicolas,
who is said to have lived alone on San Nicolas Island from 1835 to
1853.
