"Island of the Blue Dolphins" is an awesome novel choice to grab a class' interest. Because of its never ending action, students LOVE my Reading class and can't wait for the next chapter. My classes alternate between reading the novel together out loud to listening to it on audio or reading with a partner.
Every 2 to 3 chapters there are 10 multiple choice questions to monitor comprehension. Question types are spiraled throughout the sets of questions. Questions range from lower level basic questions about setting, cause/effect,etc to higher level questions such as conclusions/inferences, author's organization & purpose, summary, etc. An answer key is provided. (Chapters 13 & 14 do not have an activity.)
When using these questions in my classroom, I typically conduct mini-lessons throughout the novel that correspond with a particular question that I know will be covered in that chapter's set of questions.
I have also included a Main Idea and Character Traits activity that lasts through the entire reading of the novel.
