This is a packet to go along with the wonderful story of Karana on the Island of the Blue Dolphins. This packet was created for my 4th grade class and they will be using it mostly independently with small group discussions a few times a week. Since it will be for independent work, I tried to make it simple yet thought provoking.
Included in this packet is a note-taking sheet/question sheet for each chapter. Some chapters are combined. Students are to read the chapter/s and complete the sheet. Then, they are to find a partner to discuss the chapter/s and the notes they took on their sheet. You can copy the sheets as a packet or individual sheets.
At the end I have included a sheet for students to write the next chapter and explain what they think happens with Karana's life, a sheet for figurative language, and one final sheet to focus on all of the wildlife in the novel.
Topics covered include:
- Each chapter has students finding challenging vocabulary words. They can use these words for word work. There is also room for students to write down questions they have as they read the chapter.
-character traits, symbols, archetypes
-descriptive and figurative language
I hope you and your students can use this packet and get a lot out of this classic novel. Happy teaching!!
