If you like accompanying a fun, authentic writing project with novels--this is perfect for you! This writing project is a "message in a bottle" project based on the story Island of the Blue Dolphins by Scott O' Dell. This writing project asks students to send Karana, the main character in the story, a letter. There are several requirements that students need to address in their letters, for example "explain a modern technology that you use that Karana would love."
This project also requires some creativity that the students love! These messages that were "thrown into the ocean for Karana to find" really help to bring the story alive! This project includes a requirement sheet and an attached rubric!
I required my students to put their letters in bottles: some included plastic water bottles, soda bottles, and even an antique glass bottle from a student's grandfather! You'd be surprised how creative students can get when they really "know" a character!
*You can use this project as an activity to extend the full novel by Scott O'Dell or Scott Foresman's Reading Street (5th Grade Unit 1.3)*
