This vocabulary activity is a research-based activity used to introduce students to words from the first chapters in Shipwreck by Gordon Korman. The activity is a pre-reading strategy that activates students' prior knowledge about the content and vocabulary presented in the text. Students also apply their prediction skills in this activity.
Students can complete the activity alone or with a partner.(I have found the activity to be more successful when students complete it with a partner.) Students are given 10 words and are asked to write ten sentences using the words based on predictions about the plot of the book. . Once the chapter(s) is read, students revisit their sentences and revise the sentences so the words are used correctly, make sense, and are based on the chapters read. Step-by-step instructions are provided on the student activity sheet.
Four word puzzles are also provided for additional word practice, enrichment, or for early finishers. The puzzles include a word scramble, a letter shape puzzle, crack the code puzzle, and a word search. Keys are provided for all puzzles.
Finally, a matching word quiz is provided to assess if students understand the words taught and studied.
