I just returned from a fabulous conference given by Dr. Robert Brooks
regarding resilience and mindsets in our students. One of the concepts we discussed was building student confidence by focusing on what a child DOES know. These areas of strength are considered an Island of Competence.

At this conference I decided to come up with a simplified visual that students and staff could use to understand this concept as well as build confidence and meaningful relationships. While Dr. Brooks spoke of using this concept solely with students, I shared the idea of using it with the staff as well, as a way to help get to know each other and share our areas of expertise with each other.
The islands come differentiated so it could be used with almost any age. I am going to use it with my 4 year old this week! While she won’t be able to write her strengths, she can draw and I am confident it will lead to a conversation that will help me get to know her better.
