Product Description
IRONY PURISTS, YOUR DAY HAS COME!

Alanis Morissette’s 1995 classic song, “Ironic,” has long been used as a teaching tool for irony. However, this has been much to the dismay of many English teachers and irony purists who point out (perhaps in the ultimate irony) that not all the examples in this song about irony are actually ironic.

In this activity, students listen to the song while reading the lyrics, then rate each ironic scenario depicted by its degree of irony—whether strong, mediocre or weak—using the graphic organizer provided. They then answer a series of questions aimed at improving the weaker examples to make them truly ironic.

Includes detailed answer keys as well as an extended thinking activity that asks students to write their own song or poem about irony, or create a parody of Morissette's classic.

Works well as an individual or group activity. Your students will love creatively brainstorming truly ironic scenarios, and you will love the opportunity to help this song finally live up to its name!
