Product Description
This lesson builds phonological awareness by isolating and pronouncing the initial phonemes of single-syllable words with the short “a” sound. In 24 pages, the child will
• preview words and their initial phonemes,
• read key words in context of related sentences,
• answer questions to isolate initial phonemes,
• pronounce initial phonemes and identify corresponding pictures, and
• trace color-coded words.

This lesson covers the initial phonemes of 16 words with the short “a” sounds:

Pat, hat, cat, bat (baseball), sat, mat, rat, bat (animal);
Dan, Jan, can, pan, fan, van, man, ran

This prereading pack is the first lesson of Book 3 from the Newitt First Grade Reading and Writing Program. A key feature of the program is that it uses linear incremental steps and repeated practices linked to higher level thinking skills. This approach gives the learner a solid foundation of reading and writing experiences. In the process, the learner gains routine study habits, motivation to learn, confidence, and mastery.

Please print the lesson double-sided and then cut in half, so that each page is 5 1/2” by 8 1/2”. Each lesson has 24 sides.

“What a great program! Great for PreK–2nd grade! A must try for the visual learner! Newitt Learning is a fantastic curriculum.”
Amy Gracia, homeschool mother of four.
