Introduce students to the conflict with reviewing Zionism and how Herzl, the Balfour Declaration, and WWII all contributed to the rise of Zionism in the 20th century. Next students read an article and answer questions that review the conflicts and peace attempts that have occurred since the formation of Israel. Last, students read primary source documents to learn about the Arab and Jewish perspective. Students use this information to participate in a Socratic Seminar. Students use Bloom's Taxonomy sentence starters to develop their own questions to use during the Socratic Seminar the following day.
You can spend one day in class reading and one day with the Socratic Seminar or you can assign the readings as homework and have the students prepare independently for the Socratic Seminar.
