Review of "It All Starts With You!"
The book deals with the difficult issue of childhood bullying. It starts with Mickey, a new kid in school who tries to fit in and be "cool". However, because of his feelings of inadequacy he ends up taking his frustration out on another student by pushing her down. This student then passes on her feelings of frustration on to another until the bullying comes full circle back to Mickey. He realizes that he is the one who can change this cycle, which he does.
The author presents this story using rhyming couplets in an up and down, wavy-motion font that reflects the up and down emotions of the characters. The rhyming is similar to Sendak and Seuss's style, fresh and whimsical, yet it skillfully addresses a serious subject matter. I loved the repeated lines "Why are we mean? What can we do? We can make things better, and it can start with you!" What a great affirmation for kids to adopt! The repetition of this line throughout the book makes it easy for kids to remember. Another repeated phrase, "Some kids were mean, some made him sad, some made him nervous, some made him mad" helps kids to understand the concept that we all have the same feelings.
