Hello! My name is Nicole Williams. As a classroom teacher and a intermediate and middle school reading specialist, I have noticed that many students, both struggling and proficient readers, often have a difficult time making inferences while reading and answering inferential questions. This graphic organizer, based on the Kylene Beers "It Says, I Say, And So strategy ( When Kids Can't Read/What Teachers Can Do, Heinemann 2002) provides a visual method for students to walk through the steps of combining information from the text with their own background knowledge to make inferences. I have used it with my students in a number of areas, from literature circle discussions, to answer questions out of social studies textbooks.
