This second semester kindergarten curriculum teaches students to sing, say, move and play. The It's Music Time curriculum is divided up into 8 different times. Vocal Time, Singing Time, Opposite Time, Instrument Time, Movement Time, Nursery Rhyme Time, Speaking Time and Story Time.
These lessons are very versatile, depending on how long the class is, and what the chosen focus is for the class. Many resources are needed for the curriculum, including books, music tracks, and printouts. Most books you can get at your local library, and most music tracks you can buy on iTunes, or have an easy alternative already in your collection.
Students will learn how to use their voice in a musical way with fun warm-ups that go along with the concept of the unit. Later in the year students will learn how to see high and low and then so and mi.
Students will be able to learn fun songs that work with the concept for the unit. These songs are children’s songs that have been passed down from previous generations and are favorites for many.
Opposite Time is where the “meat” of the lesson occurs. There are 2-4 musical activities to help the students master the musical concepts.
One or two instruments are chosen for each unit to introduce un-pitched percussion to the kindergarteners.
One or two movement activities are provided for the students to enhance their knowledge of the musical concept being taught each lesson.
NURSERY RHYME TIME
One nursery rhyme is chosen for each unit. In the first lesson the focus is on learning the nursery rhyme. In the 2nd and 3rd lessons the musical concept is added to the nursery rhyme.
Several fingerplays are included in each unit. This helps students feel the rhythm in their voice, memorize a short piece, use hand motions to represent words and begin hearing rhyming words.
The students are gathered to hear a sung story to calmly end class. These stories are often folk songs that have been put into a book.
