What's a SMARTICLE? For me, it's a SMall, SMart article and they're perfect for developing many close reading behaviors in young readers.
This SMARTICLE, It's Shore Pretty!, is focused on the topic of the ocean shoreline: Where do waves come from? How do shells end up on the beach? Why do some seabirds stand at the water's edge?. It's a great supplemental piece for several studies, including:
• Sea Life
• Nonfiction Reading Strategies
The 4-page article includes text most appropriate for children in grades 2-3, but it will also work for 4th graders who need a bit more support.
You can project the article electronically and guide the children through the text or print it and teach children how to annotate each page with their notes and ideas. Try using the article:
• In Small Groups
• As a Partner Activity
• In a Literacy Center
• As a Homework Option
Text features help aid comprehension and the written response sheets at the end allow children to demonstrate understanding by:
• Asking and Answering Their Own Questions
• Studying the Meanings of Key Words
• Taking a Short Quiz Using Text-Based Evidence
