“It’s a birthday!” Students love to celebrate their birthday and the birthdays of composers and what a better way to do it then by practicing known rhythms! This file contains TONS of musical presents in which your students can practice rhythms that they know!
Included in this file:
*** 2 PDF files which work with the Beatles’ well-known song, “Birthday!”. In these PDFs your students will move, dance, improve and read rhythms that they know while the song “Birthday is being played”. One PDF includes rhythms written in stick notation without note heads and one PDF includes rhythms written in stick notation with note heads. Thorough directions for working the PDF with the song are included. ***PLEASE NOTE: due to copyright laws you will need to purchase the MP3 recording of the song “Birthday”. You can easily find it on iTunes. ***
*** A “Blow Out the Candles” rhythm memory game: in this game your students will read an 8 beat pattern. When they “blow” two candles will blow out and they’ll have to remember the entire 8 beats, even though some beats are no longer visible. This will continue until all the flames are gone and the students are performing the rhythm from memory. Only one version of this game is included: written in traditional stick notation, without note heads.
*** A Gift Tag Relay Game: in this game your students will practice aural decoding. The students will be divided into teams and will race to find the gift tag that matches the performed pattern. The teacher can choose between 4 and 8 beat patterns. All gift tags are writing in stick notation with note heads and stick notation without note heads. All 4 beat patterns match the flashcards in the set.
*** A Gift Tag dictation and composition activity for 2/4 and 4/4 meter and for 4 and 8 beat patterns.
*** MULTIPLE flashcards, with 10 games to go with them!!! Included are directions for using the flashcards with the Beatles “Birthday” song and in correlation with other composers’ birthdays!
* There are 4 sets of large flashcards: cupcakes, candles, candles with polka dots and gifts. These are each written in two forms: stick notation without note heads & stick notation with note heads.
* There are 4 sets of small flashcards: cupcakes, candles, candles with polka dots and gifts. These are each written in two forms: stick notation without note heads & stick notation with note heads.
All rhythms are non-specific to a counting system. That is, which ever counting system you might use will work with this file! (Gordon, Takadimi, Chêvé, etc)
