This project works at the middle or high school level, and teaches concepts related to matter through student self-discovery. It's differentiated to three different scaffolding/ability levels.
Highlight physical and chemical properties, the phases of matter, and types of matter through materials science by challenging students to pick materials to build a monument!
We integrated this with our Civic/History class, our English/Language Arts class, and with Art. The project for Civics relates to picking a subject for the monument, and determining how to get it approved and built; English focused on writing letters advocating for the monument; and in Art, they're building models of the monument. It can tie in easily to field trips, as well, if there are any historical markers, museums, or sites near your school!
