It’s a Worm’s Life! Reading Comprehension
& Fluency Practice is a collection of informational texts about the earthworm. The graphics are geared for this young audience, and spark high interest in the subject matter. In each reading passage, the concepts are simplified and explained, again, with first graders in mind. Also, each passage is offered separately for fluency practice, with a word count after each line of text, to help students increase their reading fluency. Every passage has colored, underlined science vocabulary words, with simple definitions. To enhance fluency, I have used as many sight/High Frequency Words as possible, and I bring attention to these by asking students to circle words that they have already learned in their class.
This kind of reading comprehension exercises will come in handy when students start their animal reports, (my first graders do that in April), since now they will have an idea of what key information will be needed in their reports. This subject also works well the up=coming Earth Day... Common Core aligned:
RI.1.1, RI.1.2, and RI.1.4
