Students use only their senses to determine what the item is hiding in the box (tissue boxes work great!). Great beginning of the year activity as students explore the scientific process and how scientists use their senses to observe.
Alternative to this activity is to use the boxes you create (again a simple empty tissue box works great) to place items in for a reading inference activity. Students pull items out of the box (i.e. sunglasses, seashell, sunscreen) and write them down, and then they write down what they know about the objects (all have to do with outside, sun, beach) to come up with an inference (someone spent the day at the beach).
