Description
Homonyms and homophones can be very difficult, especially for ESL students. As part of our commonly confused words, homonyms, and homophone lesson series I made these task cards for my students to practice distinguishing between its and it's. This activity provides 24 sentences for students to practice distinguishing between its and it’s. A digital task cards version for distance learning is also available. This paper version can be played four ways:
Clip It!: Place the cards and large container of clothes pins in a literacy center. Students read the sentence and place a clip on the correct “it”. The recording sheet can also be used for teacher-check at a later time.
Scoot: Either place the cards around the room (students scoot) pass one out to each student (cards scoot). Students then proceed to read the sentence and record the answer on their answer sheet.
Response cards: Teacher reads the sentences aloud and students hold up the correct card in response. This is a great way to quickly check for whole group understanding.
Slap: Divide the students into two teams. One person from each team comes forward and takes a fly swatter. The teacher then reads the sentence and students try to be the first to slap the correct “it”.
