I have always believed the saying "students don't care how much you know until they know how much you care." Sometimes we are focused so much on finding and helping a student learn what he/she doesn't know that we might not always notice or praise what they do well. These "I've Noticed" notes have reminded me to do just that.
To use, I run off copies of an "I've Notgiced" page and then clip those to a class list. At the end of the school day I pull these out and think of one or two students that I can write a note to. On my class list I put the date next to that student's name so I will know who has already received a note. I leave the note along with a little treat on their desk to be found in the morning. The students eagerly read the kind/motivating words I have written and either take the note home to show their parents, or save it in their student portfolio.
