"Rocco's Riff" is a Jazz Combo Arrangement
for middle school or high school jazz ensemble for up to 10 parts. This is an up-tempo minor swing tune in A-A-B-A form. Although the tune includes multiple chord changes, players can use just two major scales to create a solo with good results.
This arrangement has 3 different horn parts, each duplicated by two instruments: a melody (Trumpet 1, Alto Sax 1), upper harmony (Trumpet 2, Alto Sax 2), and optional lower harmony (Trombone 3, Tenor Sax 3). Alternatively, you can swap parts with like-keyed instruments: e.g. have tenor sax or clarinet play the Trumpet 1 part, bari sax play the Alto 2 part, etc. These could even be used as full jazz band charts by doubling parts for whatever additional instruments you have.
Jazz scales are written for soloists, and each arrangement includes jazz solos for players new to improvisation. Simplified voicings for piano and guitar make them playable by everyone, and a bass line is included in the piano part for "key bass" if no bass player is available.
"Rocco's Riff" can also be used as sight-reading practice for high school band, last minute concert fillers, or first day get-out-your-horn-and-play charts.
