Before beginning any Shakespearean play, I always take some time to have students discover background information about the play and the characters. The first portion of this packet requires students to complete some before-hand research. They may use their textbooks, the internet, any other online services, other books, etc. to locate the information. You could even assign partners, or create a class wiki, and assign certain questions to individual students. For this section, students must list their sources.
The second portion of the packet deals with answering questions while reading ACT I Scenes i & ii. For some, the answers are simple. For others, the answers require analysis, higher-level thinking, and connection to the play's material. This is a great way to begin the play. Having these discussion topics and questions will actively engage the students in the reading. You could have students complete the worksheet, or you could turn the questions into an online discussion board moderated by you the instructor.
